John Tavares, who was not surprisingly named the top OHL prospect for the 2009 Entry Draft when Central Scouting released its Preliminary Rankings earlier this week, may not be with the Oshawa Generals much longer. According to published reports, Oshawa management is looking to shop the superstar center for a package of assets that would ensure the long-term health of the franchise; a deal structured along the lines of the trade late last season that saw London trade goalie Steve Mason to Kitchener for center Phil Varone, defenseman Steve Tarasuk along with second-, third- and fourth-round draft picks in 2011 and a second round pick in 2012. Windsor GM Warren Rychel told Mike Brophy of Sportsnet.ca that he was contacted by the Generals on Wednesday to be informed that Tavares was on the block ?I got a call five minutes ago," Rychel said Wednesday afternoon. ?Obviously our team is interested in him, but I?m not about to mortgage the future of this franchise to get him. Our strength is down the middle.?
